Middle School
Spanish (Grades 5-8) The Spanish curriculum is primarily based on the foreign language standards for Massachusetts, has well as teacher knowledge and student interest. Careful thought is given to selecting themes and activities which will allow students to regularly gain experience in the five major strands of language learning (communication, cultures, comparisons, connections, and communities). Teacher goals include promoting a balanced instructional program that develops speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. The Spanish language curriculum is designed to allow the students to build on knowledge they have previously acquired. Throughout the school year students are introduced to new vocabulary. Teachers expect students to utilize this growing body of vocabulary orally and to identify the written forms. In order for students to become proficient users of new vocabulary, spiraling of previously learned material occurs within each set of information that is introduced. The Spanish language curriculum engages and challenges students with activities and texts that are both age-appropriate and demanding enough to foster further inquiry. |
